Author prospects for a new dentist

Hope you're all having a wonderful holiday.

I'm hoping to get some feedback on career prospects for newly-graduated
dentists. I'm originally from the NYC area and would prefer to remain
in the same location if possible. But I'm keen to relocate if better
opportunities arise.

I expect a DDS around May, with both NERB and WREB certifications. My
class rank is right in the middle and I'll probably do a residency
after graduation.

Anyways, in terms of employment, what should I be expecting in terms of
opportunities and salaries around this area? What about elsewhere? Do
dentists generally stay in the same location or do they relocate
repeatedly in search of positions?

And what is your take on the advertised positions in the JADA magazine?
Some are claiming salaries 1.5x - 2x more than the national average and
are inviting resumes from both new and experienced dentists. I don't
know if these are credible and, if they are, I'm assuming they'll be
competitive to attain.

I'm asking all this because it appears to me that now doesn't seem to
be a good time to enter dentistry. The consensus seems to be that there
are too many dentists in the market and dentists see less patients than
the amount they're aiming for.

Congratulations on your upcoming graduation. Can't say I have any
recent info on new grads' prospects, but I can tell you there has been a
perception of a relative oversupply of dentists since before I graduated.

Just a thought, but this may have something to do with their new
relationship with, and the strategies of, careerbuilder.

There's the rub.

Opportunities for new dentists are quite abundant in many parts
of the US. However, many metropolitan areas are more saturated.

Where dentists are really needed, you don't have to buy a practice
or start as an associate. Where the market is pretty full, you
may need to work into a position. The trick there is to find an
office where they really want you to be part of the long term
picture and not just a short term money maker for the practice.

Good luck,
D

There is always room for a good one.
The academic 'consensus' is far from reality.
