Taking Medicaid Patients - A REFRESHING VIEW!
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Someone was lurking on Dentaltown and found this inspiring post made by
one of the doctors there (I personally do not think it is a sin to lurk
there or to post this here. If anyone thinks it is, please let me know
and I will delete this):
When I was approached about buying my current practice I was a little
put off that it was the only one in the county (out of 5 G.P's) that
accepted new Medicaid patients. I didn't even take PPO's in the big
city, for Pete's sake. I was tempted to pull the plug on the Medicaid,
but I couldn't get past the fact that these people would have no place
to go in our county.
I reasoned that keeping this program open could count as my community
service; instead of doing Habitat for Humanity or some other volunteer
work, I would accept Medicaid and their discounted fees.
I'm glad I did. The vast majority of these parents and their kids are a
joy to work with, and they really appreciate being able to come here.
Talk about making friends...you'll make a ton if you serve the
disadvantaged.
We are also starting to get into the habit of talking with the kids
about their future when we have them in the chair; they seem so
surprised that we have a vision for them that is way beyond their own.
We also emphasize that if they just see us regularly they can keep all
of their teeth; this is a real attitude shift for them.
In the big city I felt like a crown and veneer salesman; here, I feel
like a doctor, and people treat me like one. I don't mind that a bit.
Best wishes,
Doug

I just setup mogo and professor suni at an office that is taking
medicaid patients in an office that is in a part of town where I double
check to be sure my car is locked. Brand new dentist out of school, and
around $300,000 in debt.. She has a good attitude to boot. I figured,
if she is lowering her fees, I can lower mine too. But only if you
primarily work with medicaid patients.

Justin,
You people are great! I know the system is not perfect, but there are
many that really need this help and are not abusing the system.
Take Care,
Sue
