AOL to drop direct access to UsenetThe Associated Press
Updated: 11:15 p.m. ET Jan. 26, 2005
NEW YORK - America Online will stop providing direct access to Usenet
newsgroups, one of the earliest forums on the Internet for people to
discuss a large variety of topics from television shows to software to
sex.
REPLY
I told you guys to stop talking about sex.

It says: "The move to drop AOL next month comes as usage of the service
has shrunk to fewer than 1,000 users a month. AOL has some 23 million
subscribers in the United States alone..."
Yes, Usenet users are a minority, but it is really difficult to believe
that there are only 1000 out of 23 million. Even if that is true and they lose
those 1000 users, don't you think that the revenue loss will be more that it
costs them to keep that one lousy server going? Naturally, I don't give a hoot
about what happens on AOL, but this really makes me think that the end of Usenet
is in sight.
If AT&T is listening, I use them (and pay a premium) because they have good
Usenet access. If they drop Usenet, I will get a $9.99 ISP and pay a commercial
news service for as long as Usenet survives.

I think Jan figured out how to get on thru google....as when I blocked her
thru her aol address, she still cam thru. When I checked she was coming thru
google. The new google groups is real easy to use, and is almost real
time...where there used to be a 3-6 hour delay.

You forgot the next paragraph! It reads,
Of the 1,000 users, many were variants of the name jandrew, but all of
them were complaining about removing mercury fillings with coffee
enemas .....

Yes, but unlike AOL, Google groups takes complaints seriously since
they are a free service. Her egregiously abusive posts will not be
tolerated by Google Groups.

I think it will take quite a while to go away completely, last time I
reloaded NGs from ATT there were well over 40,000 as I recall. There have
to be at least 100,000 or more NGs, somebody will supply the demand. I
would expect to see fewer ISPs providing access in the future though.

| How much do you want to bet AOL is dropping newsgroups due to the large file
sizes which get transferred from binary groups? I don't for one minute
believe there are only 1K users accessing NG's from AOL. The type of ISP
that AOL is probably attracts lots of binary browsers.

| At dinner the other night, one of my sisters mentioned that she had cable
modem. plus she was paying for AOL. $9.95 a month more to get the AOL
pretty screens! I tried to point out how she could save that $10/month and
just use the cable service; and had to shut up and change the subject before
all my sisters and their spouses got up and left from the viciousness of her
adamant intent to keep AOL forever. It looks to be as hard to get off AOL
as it is to get off tobacco or alcohol.

And over 55% have learned how to log on when their second-grader is in
school. That would be batting .550 if you were in MLB, but this is real
life. However, in 5 years there will be a federal program to address this.
