Cannabis joints have more tar than cigarettes
March 27 2006 at 08:27AM
Paris - Smoking three cannabis joints will cause you to inhale
the same amount of toxic chemicals as a whole packet of
cigarettes, according to research published in France on Monday.
Cannabis smoke contains seven times more tar and carbon
monoxide, the French National Consumers' Institute concluded in
research published in the April edition of its monthly magazine.
The institute tested regular Marlboro cigarettes alongside 280
specially rolled joints of cannabis leaves and resin in an
artificial smoking machine.
The tests examined the content of the smoke for tar and carbon
monoxide, as well as for the toxic chemicals nicotine, benzene
and toluene.
"Cannabis smoke contains seven times more tar and carbon
monoxide than tobacco smoke," the institute's magazine Sixty
Million Consumers said.
Someone smoking a joint of cannabis resin rolled with tobacco
will inhale twice the amount of benzene and three times as much
toluene as if they were smoking a regular cigarette, the study
said.
Smokers of pure cannabis leaves will also inhale more of these
chemicals than from a normal cigarette, though the amount varies
depending on the quantities.
"Smoking three joints every day - which is becoming frequent -
makes you run the same risks of cancer or cardio-vascular
diseases as smoking a packet of cigarettes," the magazine said.
Cannabis is "by far" the most popular illicit drug in France, it
said. The number of cigarette smokers and people drinking
alcohol fell in 2005, while the number of cannabis users has
increased in France over the past five years. - Sapa-AFP

Have they deliberately not tested the most popular part of the cannabis
plant for smoking - the dried and cured flowers?
Does the new super strength skunk also contain 20x the amount of tar than
people were smoking in the 60s and 70s?

seems that way doesn't it? more telling: why is *legal* to smoke a
pack of cigarettes a day, but *illegal* to smoke three joints?
something tells me that it has nothing to do with the presence of
benzopyrenes.

only in the leaves ;^)

Cannibis smoke does actually have more tar than the equivalent
cigarette smoke but they forget a few things.
* People only need the euivalent of one to one-half joints to
get stoned.
* Cannabis does not have the most dangerous chemical found in
cigs - nicotine.

We've been through this several times here. As far as I am aware, they are
almost identical (which considering cannabis and tobacco are both made
from plants is unsurprising).

That will depend on whether it's made of the stuff we were smoking in the
60s and 70s or the new super-strength weed we're smoking now, shirley?

Which is very carcinogenic, especially when damp.

Moderate smokers will hold to that dose. OTOH, we all know
cig smokers who choke down 2-4 packs per day.

I seem to recall a botany text that gave chemical assays for
about a hundred or so well-known plants. They *all* contained
nicotine, but in far less concentration than in nicotiana. It's an
effective insect poison, so no surprise. It may well be *the* most
popular alkaloid among the happy denizens of the plant kingdom.
Note that the essential B vitamin, niacin, used to be called
nicotinic acid.

Nicotinic acid was first discovered from the oxidation of
nicotine, hence the name. It is an entirely different chemical
compound.

| If you smoke it through a bong then, you get rid of almost all of the
bad stuff. So be safe buy a bong.

excerpt:
Nicotinic acid was first discovered from the oxidation of nicotine.
When the properties of nicotinic acid were discovered, it was thought
prudent to choose a name to dissociate it from nicotine and to avoid
the idea that either smoking provided vitamins or that wholesome food
contained a poison. The resulting name 'niacin' was derived from
nicotinic acid + vitamin.

Thanks for this one. A smoker friend with epilepsy is going
to find this link useful.

| according to this study, that is not true:
http://www.canorml.org/healthfacts/smokestudy.html
but it is also important to bear in mind that the better the quality of
your smoke, the less you use, and thus your exposure to the bad stuff
is minimized.
make pot safer by legalizing it.
no one would smoke leaves or bowl tar if they could get quality nugs at
a decent price.

My leaves are a safer-smoking product than my buds... because I make oil out
of them and throw all the plant-matter in the trash. :-D

I seem to remember that tests were run and this is not true. Although I don't
know if the tests were run with ice cold, tap cold, lukewarm or tap hot water.
Tap hot water hydrates the smoke, which may help.
