SNITCH SITE COULD LEAD TO INTERNET HITS ON RATS
By TODD VENEZIA and MURRAY WEISS
Watch out, "rats" - a Web site claiming to expose snitches, informants and
undercover cops is online and out to get you.
The Who's A Rat site has law-enforcement officials steaming, because it
allows anyone who can log onto the Internet to post pictures of alleged
stool pigeons, alongside information about where they can be found and what
they've done.
The operators of the site say it's "designed to help attorneys and criminal
defendants with few resources."
But the NYPD thinks it's also a way to put cops in the cross hairs.
"It would appear that under the guise of defendants' rights, the site
recklessly puts lives at risk," said NYPD spokesman Paul Brown.
"They have a right to their opinion under the First Amendment and so do we,"
said Anthony Capone, spokesman for the www.whosarat.com site, when asked for
comment.
Capone said the site was created by Bostonian Sean Bucci, who after being
busted on a marijuana charge "got an insight into how these agents and cops
utilize these informants that are more of a threat to society than their
targets."
The site has nearly 300 entries claiming to have information about cops and
federal agents. It also has more than 1,000 entries about civilian "rats"
and other informants.
There are no NYPD officers listed on the site, but there are federal agents
for several departments listed, some with their pictures. The FBI in New
York thinks this could put the agents at risk.

| I'll be watching for William O'Leary's pic, if it's not there already.

| Oh great. Now anyone with a vendetta against somebody can make them
look like a snitch, and get them killed by some wingnut who doesn't
even know the real score.

Yeah, isn't that great? Prison administrators know and use this
technique to their advantage. Take a prisoner into the office, he
doesn't cooperate, so they send him back with "thanks for the help,
Bubba", give him some special treats... And everybody thinks he's a
snitch now... because he wasn't.

What resource is it supposed to provide that the defendants and their
lawyers would not already have access to?
