Author Cactus buds!

Checked on my new cuttings from my San Pedro cactus yesterday. All 6 tip
cuttings are showing some new growth, and 4 of the 9 log cuttings that I
planted vertically instead of horizontally already have buds! No roots
yet but I noted before on the two that I planted horizontally that they
budded before they rooted so it should be ok. :-)

The neat thing is that it's only been 4 weeks since I cut them, and 2
weeks since I planted them! Last time I did center log cuts and planted
them horizontally, which is what is recommended for cylindrical cactus
propagation, it took 10 to 12 weeks for them to bud, and with horizontal
budding, one bud per cutting is going to be _it_.

This way, once the bud reached about 6" or so and the bottom of the
cutting is well rooted, I'll be able to remove the bud, trim the rooted
stump and allow it to form another bud. The bud I remove can be
re-rooted to form an intact new cactus. :-) If all goes well, I should
be able to get up to 20 new cactus from a single 10" to 12" center
cutting.

The 3 mother cactus that I cut are also showing new buds on all but one
branch.

This is so cool......

K the cactus mom! :-D

It's supposed to be better for plants in a related family, but who knows?

He is probably not watering them enough, and/or may have poor soil.
The soil I am using is a 30% each mix of Miracle grow, perlite and sand.
I was running out of play sand so used some of the washed limestone
sandpile that I have to use in the bird pens. That may also have
contributed to the better results as most real desert sand tends to be
slightly alkaline. :-)

While you can rot cactus if you over-water, underwatering gets you zero
growth rates! I let cactus dry between waterings, but water as soon as
the soil gets dry.

And yes, there IS money to be made locally off of growing SP! There is a
high demand and a low supply. Just one grower in Austin and he does not
have much available.

I'd like to make smaller, less expensive ones more widely available. He
just sells larger pots and that is how I got mine. I have $275.00 sunk
into the 5 large mother cactus, and one will remain uncut as an "eye
candy" specimen in with the rest of my cactus collection!

Both the local nurseries and the head shop want to carry them.
It will be at least Christmas before I have a few available, and at
least a year before I have really good production.

It's all good. :-)

If you are talking REAL cactus.. you will!

I had an idea last night after reading this post.. so I had to sober up
and re-read this post.. because I was out in my back yard with a
bunch of freinds bragging about your cactus..
EVERYONE thought it was the best idea they ever heard! Now, I
was telling everyone about your post.. and how I interpededdded it.
It sorta went like this....
*hits bong around the round table out back*

"hey.. check it out" *COUGH COUGH COUGH*
peeps: what?

I know this chick.. she is cloning pot plants..

peeps: where?

"I am not sure.. but she has a cactus, and when she clones
pot plants.. she cuts the top off of the cactus.. and plants
the clone in the cut off section of the cactus"

peeps: whoooooooo... really?

"yup.. I can't wait to try it.. imagine that.. you have this big
cactus outside, and it REALLY is a big cactus with lots and lots
of arms and stuff.. like the ones you see in arizona.. and stuff like
that ~n~shit"

peeps: *exhales* *cOuGh* faaaar out man.. tell us more.

"so she cuts off the tips of the cactus.. and takes her clones.. and plants
them on the end of the cactus.. where she cut the tip off.. now.. the
dope plants grow real big buds.. because.. she cloned the buds.. and
now she has a single bud rooted and growing.. OUT OF A CACTUS!
What a genious idea! Cactus = water.. and it looks like a cactus
plant.. but.. it has buds sticking out of it all over the place.. she has
like
two pounds of nothing but budz growing out of this cactus!"

peeps: HOLY SHIT!

"I know right?" .. I cant wait to try it.

Now.. how about the stoner idea? You think it would work?
anyone?

Yeah, enough water and some good fetilizer is important with this
plant...Sandy soil does much better than dark soils also....
