Fund Title:
Pharmacotherapy for Comorbid Alcohol and Drug Use Disorders
Fund Category:
Other Health-Related
Description:
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) and the
National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) are seeking research grant
applications on pharmacological treatment for patients with alcohol use
disorder (AUD) and a comorbid substance use disorder (SUD). Substance
use disorder may include the abuse/dependence of heroin, prescription
narcotics, cocaine, methamphetamine and other stimulants, hallucinogens,
sedative hypnotics, marijuana, and other substances of abuse. Alcoholic
abuse/dependent patients may have a co-occurring nicotine dependence,
but must also meet the criteria for other types of SUD. Research on the
specific treatment needs of this population is in early stages, and thus
well-designed studies are needed. In particular, it is important to
understand how the effects of treating one disorder affects the outcome
for the other disorder. The intervention strategy to treat one or both
comorbid conditions might depend on the type of comorbidity as well as
the subtype of comorbid AUD/SUD patient. In addition, applications can
include the utilization of human laboratory paradigms to screen
potential medications for subsequent phase 2 and 3 trials as well as to
determine the actions of the medications for the treatment of comorbid
AUD and SUD. All applications submitted in response to this program
announcement should be conducted in humans. In addition, all applicants
are encouraged to evaluate the interactions among alcohol, the abused
substance and the medication under investigation.

Simian Models for the Oral Biology of HIV Infection and AIDS-Related
Oral Complications
Fund Category:
HIV/AIDS
Description:
This Program Announcement with set-aside funds (PAS) solicits
applications that will use nonhuman primate models to study the oral
biology of HIV infection and the oral complications associated with
AIDS. This is an exploratory/developmental award with limited funding
that is designed to maximize the use of animals currently involved in
ongoing studies. Studies that will increase our knowledge of the basic
biology, pathogenic mechanisms, immunology, diagnosis, treatment, and
prevention of oral HIV/AIDS in simian macaque models are requested.
Exploratory projects in emerging areas of importance for oral
manifestations of AIDS and other acquired immunodeficiencies are of
particular interest. It is expected that investigators will base their
studies on recent developments in the field and will make use of the new
and emerging state of the art technologies.

Fund Title:
Development of Assays for High Throughput Drug Screening
Fund Category:
HIV/AIDS
Description:
The purpose of this PA is to encourage the use of high throughput small
molecule screening for use in both research and drug discovery programs
by funding the development of innovative assays that may be adapted for
automated screening. The assays would aim to identify new tools for
basic research and promising new avenues for therapeutics development,
especially in areas related to the missions of NIDDK, NCI, and NIAID.
The NCI is especially interested in proposals related to cancer
prevention, treatment or treatment monitoring with imaging agents.
Assays pertinent to the mission of NCI should be justified as relevant
to cancer and may include any physiology, cell biology or developmental
process with the goal of identifying molecules that either perturb the
system (e.g., drugs for cancer prevention or treatment) or yield
molecular information (e.g., imaging agents). NIAID is particularly
interested in proposals directly addressing infectious or immune-
mediated disease or basic immunology. Proposals may focus on assays
targeting etiologic agents of human infectious disease including, but
not limited to, potential agents of biodefense (categories A, B, and C),
as well as other newly emerging infectious agents. Pathogens with
abnormally high global burdens of disease such as HIV, tuberculosis, and
malaria, as well as toxins or arthropod vectors of infectious agents as
targets will also be included. In order to be supported by NIDDK through
this PA, proposed assays should be relevant to NIDDK's scope of
research, which includes obesity, diabetes, diabetic complications,
endocrine disease, liver and digestive diseases, kidney and urological
diseases, hematology, and inborn errors of metabolism.

Fund Title:
Access to Recovery (ATR) Grants
Fund Category:
HIV/AIDS
Description:
The United States Department of Health and Human Services (HHS),
Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration's (SAMHSA)
Center for Substance Abuse Treatment (CSAT) is accepting applications
for fiscal year (FY) 2004 grants to implement voucher programs for
substance abuse clinical treatment and recovery support services
pursuant to sections 501 (d)(5) and 509 of the Public Health Service Act
(42 U.S.C. sections 290aa(d)(5) and 290bb-2). This new program, called
Access to Recovery (ATR), is part of a Presidential initiative to
provide client choice among substance abuse clinical treatment and
recovery support service providers, expand access to a comprehensive
array of clinical treatment and recovery support options (including
faith-based programmatic options), and increase substance abuse
treatment capacity. Monitoring outcomes, tracking costs, and preventing
waste, fraud, and abuse to ensure accountability and effectiveness in
the use of Federal funds are also important elements of the ATR program.
Through the ATR grants, States, territories, the District of Columbia,
and tribal organizations (hereinafter collectively referred to as
"States'') will have flexibility in designing and implementing voucher
programs to meet the needs of clients in the State. The key to
successful implementation of the voucher programs supported by the ATR
grants will be the relationship between the States and clients receiving
services, to ensure that clients have a genuine, free, and independent
choice among eligible providers. States are encouraged to support any
mixture of clinical treatment and recovery support services that can be
expected to achieve the program's goal of achieving cost- effective,
successful outcomes for the largest number of people.
