Fund Number: 2484
Fund Title:
Research education Grants in Drug Abuse and Addiction

Fund Category:
Other Health-Related

Description:
The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Research education grant is
a flexible and specialized mechanism designed to foster the development
of drug addiction researchers through creative and innovative
educational programs. Programs that focus on preparing researchers in
cross-disciplinary integration and/or translational research of
neuroscience, basic behavioral, prevention, clinical, treatment, and
services research are particularly encouraged. Of particular interest
are educational experiences that will attract, train, and further the
career development of physician scientists and other clinical
professionals, underrepresented minority scientists, and adolescent,
pediatric and geriatric researchers interested in pursuing research
relevant to the mission of NIDA. NIDA invites grant applications to
support innovative educational programs that focus on preparing
researchers in clinical research careers relevant to drug abuse and
addiction. This PA invites applications using the R25 mechanism that
will focus on providing creative and innovative education research
experiences at all levels of professional career development (i.e.,
independent scientists, postdoctoral fellows, clinical residents,
medical students, and/or graduate students). This educational training
experience must hold the promise of fostering new research approaches
that advance the current drug abuse and addiction field. It is expected
that these institutional research sites will develop or enhance research
training opportunities for individuals, selected by the institution, who
are training for careers as researchers, as clinicians, or, optimally,
as a combination of the two. Educational partnerships between
institutions-such as, research institutions, drug abuse treatment
organizations, primary care organizations--are highly encouraged in
order to broaden research training and educational opportunities and, as
a result, increase the number of well-trained clinical and health
services researchers in the drug abuse and addiction field at large.

Fund Title:
National Resource Center on Sexual Violence Prevention

Fund Category:
STD

Description:
The purposes of this program are to (1) provide national leadership in
the prevention of sexual violence; (2) provide comprehensive information
and resources on sexual violence (e.g. sexual violence across the
lifespan, the continuum of prevention, etc.) through a central resource
library and Web site; and (3) provide technical assistance and
professional consultation to State sexual assault coalitions and local
sexual assault programs; local, state, national and tribal agencies and
organizations (including public health agencies and organizations), and
the media designed to enhance the prevention of and community response
to sexual violence. For the purposes of this program announcement the
following definitions apply: Intervention: services, policies and
actions provided after sexual violence has occurred and that may have
the advantageous effect of preventing a re-occurrence of violence.
Prevention: population-based and/or environmental/system level services,
policies and action that prevent sexual violence from initially
occurring. Prevention efforts work to modify and/or entirely eliminate
the event, conditions, situations, or exposure to influences (risk
factors) that result in the initiation of sexual violence and associated
injuries, disabilities, and deaths. Additionally, prevention efforts
seek to identify and enhance protective factors that may prevent sexual
violence not only in at-risk populations but also in the community at
large. This program addresses the "Healthy People 2010'' focus area of
Injury and Violence Prevention.

Fund Number: 2486
Fund Title:
International Research Scientist Development Award

Fund Category:
HIV/AIDS

Description:
The Fogarty International Center (FIC), the National Institute of
Nursing Research (NINR), the NIH Office of Dietary Supplements (ODS),
and the National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences (NIEHS)
solicit proposals for the International Research Scientist Development
Award (IRSDA). This program supports U.S. postdoctoral biomedical,
social, and behavioral scientists in the formative stages of their
careers to conduct research in, or extend their research into,
developing countries. It provides the successful candidate with a period
of mentored research as part of an established collaboration between a
U.S. sponsor and a leading developing country scientist at an
internationally recognized research institution in a developing country.
It is expected that this experience will prepare scientists to pursue an
international research career involving on-going collaboration with
developing country scientists on global health challenges. The IRSDA is
part of the FIC strategy to encourage research collaborations in
developing countries in order to build research capacity to address
global health research priorities. The role of the IRSDA is to (1)
attract new research talent to global health research and enhance multi-
disciplinary synergy among the research collaborators at the U.S. and
foreign site; (2) advance the career paths of exceptional junior U.S.
scientists with mentored training in health issues of developing country
populations; (3) extend the impact and reach of existing research and
training support for developing country scientists and U.S. scientists
committed to international research; (4) provide opportunities for
developing country institutions with significant potential to advance to
higher levels of research excellence; and (5) stimulate a more effective
translation of the results of research on global health problems into
practical public health actions. With IRSDA support, the investigator
will have the opportunity to work closely with both an established
foreign scientist in the developing world and a U.S. investigator who
are involved in collaborative research. The applicant will conduct
research and receive training at both the developed and developing
country institutions. It is expected that these awards will serve to
forge collaborative relationships between established, developing
country researchers and outstanding U.S. junior scientists, who are
potential future heads of basic, clinical and behavioral/social health
research programs in the U.S. Collaborations are expected to lead to
advances that will reduce the impact of global health problems and
narrow the gap in health disparities between developed and developing
countries. NINR is only interested in applications from nursing
scientists who are pursuing careers related to HIV/AIDS. NINR will
support initial applications for K01 awards. Renewal applications will
be supported by Fogarty International Center.

Fund Number: 2487
Fund Title:
Improving Care for Dying Children and Their Families

Fund Category:
HIV/AIDS

Description:
The National Institute of Nursing Research (NINR), the National Cancer
Institute (NCI), and the National Institute of Child Health and Human
Development (NICHD) invite applications to encourage research that will
improve the quality of life for children who are approaching the end of
life, the quality of the dying process, and bereavement following the
death for the children's families, friends and other care providers. For
this PA, family is defined broadly in terms of traditional families and
non-traditional families including children being cared for in foster
situations, by distant relatives, or friends. Children are defined
according to NIH as individuals below 21 years of age. Attention to
children of all developmental stages, infancy through adolescence, is
highly encouraged. The chapter on research directions in the IOM report
(2002) offers suggestions for future research directions regarding care
for dying children and their families. HIV/AIDS is one of the examples
of potential research topics which also include, but are not limited to
the following: (1) Identify age specific end-of-life issues from infancy
through adolescence and determine how the age of the child and or the
age of the parents influences the dying process; (2) Test ways of
integrating palliative care with life prolonging therapies in children
with life threatening illnesses; (3) Identify the dying trajectories of
children (e.g., sudden death vs. life threatening condition) and
determine if interventions can and should be structured according to the
trajectories; (4) Test interventions to facilitate communication among
health professionals and the extended family in different situations
such as prenatal diagnosis of a fatal condition, premature birth, and
death of a child from traumatic injury or chronic illness such as
cancer; (5) Evaluate the role of health care providers in the lives of
chronically ill children and their families, especially when the
emphasis changes from cure to end-of-life care, or when families have
few supports outside of the health care system.
