Hi Kathy,
I don't think yeast is the cause of CFIDS, either, although I think it can
play a huge role. Often, when people get their Candida overgrowth under control,
some of their odd symptoms may be alleviated. I only said that it has been
THEORIZED to activate auto-immune problems or immune dysfunction, and CFIDS/CFS
is believed by some to be an immune dysfunction syndrome. I don't think my CFS
was CAUSED by yeast overgrowth, but for me, it was a contributing factor in
its development because I think it (a)caused my immune system to be "down" or
(b) is caused by immune system to be over-active. I also have all of the other
"risk factors" for CFS, as well, so it was really a combination of things for
me. I am totally aware that one might be genetically predisposed to CFS, but
you have to admit, yeast overgrowth is a big problem in society in general.
Here is why yeast overgrowth might contribute to an auto-immune problem--When the
intestinal yeast overgrowth gets bad enough, root-like filaments can
penetrate the intestinal cell barriers and cause "leaky gut syndrome" (Bear with me;
you've probably heard of this, but there may be others who haven't). When one
has a "leaky gut", or microscopic breaks in the intestinal mucosa, yeast waste,
undigested food protein, and other toxins enter the bloodstream, and the
immune system attacks these things, seeing them as foreign invaders. This is why
food allergies often develop with major yeast overgrowth of the intestines.
Anyway, when this is happening on a daily basis, the immune system goes into
overdrive, and this is when an auto-immune disease MAY, or may not, develop. I
would say Candida--->Leaky Gut--->Undigested Food/Toxins Circulating in the
bloodstream--->Immune Response=Possible Immune system activation leading to a
disease state. "These molecules[that enter the blood stream due to yeast
proliferation] can set off the immune system into inappropriate action as they are
recognized as "foreign" by the immune system. The antibodies which are produced may
attack host tissue and this may account for some autoimmune diseases."
(Kennedy, R., M.D., 2006). I think CFIDS is probably responsible for many of the
symptoms we experience, but sometimes, we can become a little bit better if we
treat all aspects of our CFIDS, Candida yeast overgrowth included. I was really
sure that I eliminated most the the yeast that I had by my extreme diet, but
now I'm thinking that maybe my overgrowth is still worse than I think it is. I
keep having major reactions to vinegar for days on end if I have it; maybe
it's because of yeast. Well, take care, Kathy.
