(I was asked to forward this around - perhaps others could post it to
lists they're on and/or to any individuals they think might be
interested e.g. people who live in the Midlands)

Dr Vance Spence, Chairman of MERGE will be giving a presentation
entitled, "M.E. Research - Making the Breakthrough" on Saturday, 12th
November. The venue is the Coventry Chamber of Commerce, Oak Tree Court
Conference Centre, Binley Business Park, Harry Weston Road, Coventry -
on the A428 just off the A46 eastern by-pass:
http://www.cw-oaktree.co.uk/index.htm . Doors will open at 2.00 pm,
with refreshments upon arrival - the presentation will begin at 2.30
pm.

Dr Spence is Honarary Senior Research Fellow at the Vascular Diseases
Research Group at the university of Dundee and Chairman of MERGE
"Myalgic Encephalomyelitis Research Group for education and Support".
He will present a brief overview of the recent research findings,
including developments in gene microarray analysis of ME/CFS patients,
the search for a diagnostic marker and how the findings relate to what
we currently know about ME/CFS. MERGE'S most recent study is designed
to see if the physiological and biochemical abnormalities being
detected in many adult patients with ME/CFS, also exist in children
with the illness.

The general thrust of his talk will be that, for the first time in many
years, there is optimism about the potential for advances in biomedical
aspects of ME/CFS. A range of researchers are beginning to report
physiological abnormalities in many patients with ME/CFS, showing what
can be achieved if scientific effort and funding are targeted towards
biomedical research, leading to therapeutic intervention and treatment.

The venue is very ME friendly, being ground floor and with plenty of
very adjacent (& FREE!) parking. It is also easy to find and readily
accessible from the midlands motorway network/A45/A46 etc being on the
outskirts of Coventry and nowhere near the dreaded ringroad! Further
details of the event are on the MERGE website
http://www.meresearch.org.uk/friends/events.html. along with one of our
members satirical cartoons.
