My dad died this morning. He was 87 years old. As a decorated WWII POW, my
dad's death on Memorial Day is most fitting.

His B-17 was shot down over Holland in '43. He was the only crew member that
survived. He spent the rest of the war in Stalag Luft III until he was
liberated by Patton in '45.

My dad is my hero - I thank God for giving me the privilege of being his son
and for my sobriety so I could be there for him today.

Steve,
You are a lucky man to have had a father worth emulating and to have
had the chance to appreciate that fact and to have been able to let him know
that you did. I am sorry that your dad has died but I am grateful that your
dad lived. The Irish expression for this feeling is: "The having of it was
worth the losing of it." I know that you believe that this is true.
