Gosh, it seems there'd precious little of that in here. Think I'll head off
to a "real" meeting. (i.e. where we read how it works, the tradtions, the promises,
etc..) If this group represents what A.A. is supposed to be like then we,
as an (loosely bound) organization, are in SERIOUS trouble.

Dave,
This group has many serious faults, but being an AA group isn't even on
the list -- or even in the title.
Even when it works correctly, this is just a discussion board on the
topic of recovery from alcohol addiction. Now, it happens that a large
number of us are in AA because the highest percentage of recovering
alcoholics that I'm aware of got there through AA. Nevertheless, at best,
it isn't a meeting or even a reasonable facsimile of a meeting.
At worst, it occasionally gets highjacked by axe-grinders and trolls of
varrious types.
In the middle ground it is a place where some of our members vent or
act out in ways that they would not do on a face to face basis.
Hey, it is what it is. Sometimes it's useful and sometimes it isn't.
On balance, though, I have found a number of useful insights through
checking in here periodically. It's a mistake, though, to try to judge it
as you would a meeting.
Best to you and yours,
Dan

Dave- Why would you think that the charter of a.r.a.a would suggest that it
'represents what A.A. is supposed to be like' ? What I see that this group
represents is a wide variety of opinions, beliefs and experiences; and
certainly not just those related to AA. For me it's the diversity of ideas
that keeps me coming back. Hope you stop by again.

p.s. you're correct, this is not a "real" meeting...our coffee is much
better.

-Steve

'precious little' is the thing to focus on, Dave. The majority of stuff
posted here is petty and has nothing to do with alcoholism. However,
sometimes the threads really are on-topic, and in those rare cases I've
gained invaluable insight and wisdom here that's helped my recovery. Those
rare gems have made it worthwhile to me to be here.

Why are there so many people touting AA then? Are they
missionaries or trolls or what? Because it seems
that it'd be like advertising or off topic.

scott,
there are a lot of folks who frequent this newsgroup who use AA as a
tool for their recovery.

If AA encourages it's members to pass on it's message and you think
you know what that message is, why not stay and share it. Then you'd
be doing 12th Step work and from such work someone here - maybe a
lurker - might benefit.

Hey I wouldn't mind smoing pot with an alcoholic as long as they do not
throw up in my bong.

Just kidding alcoholics are the reasons I cannot consume cannabis.
