Author Thunderbird as a newsreader?
Ted L.

2007-01-27, 9:39 pm

Hey all you geeks -- how is Thunderbird as a newsreader? I won't go into
all the details why, but I wanted to move several years of archived mail
from three different mailsystems from a PC to my Mac and it looked like
Thunderbird turned out to be the easiest route, so I now have it installed
on both my PC and Mac. (The email made it across just perfectly, btw -- 150
M zipped.) I have no particular reason to use it as a mailreader, but I see
it can do news too -- how is it compared to other newsreaders?

Somebody please correct me if this is incorrect, but with Thunderbird I can't find any way to search through the BODY of all posts, to find something. It seems to only allow searching the Subject header (Edit / Find / Search Messages).

Well, your dildo obviously works fine for you, too, Grace. Most women,

My favorite newsreader is Outlook Express. Thunderbird is the closest
thing to it I've tried, and can be made to work almost identically with
a handful of extensions.

Of course, making the above admission automatically gives me 12 geek
demerits.

Not going to try to compare Ted. I use it regularly due to it being able
to handle OpenPGP with no fuss as far as encryption by way of the
enigmail extension both on the Linux and Windows version and I assume
the Mac version will also if there is OpenPGP for the Mac.

Couple of annoying things I find about it is the editor has a tendency
to mal-format on occasion and put an indent on a line where there is not
an indent planned or supposed to be. ;-)

It also seems to have problems in the newsrc and data department
keeping track of read/unread messages. It seems to use what I understand
as the common "I have/you have" protocol sync with the server and every
once in a while it will start turning up and showing as unread, messages
from a week or so past that have already been marked read and the only
way I've found to straighten it out is to just delete the newsrc etc. or
un-subscribe for the particular group and start all over with a clean
slate. I had thought at first it was the news server I was using, but at
present I'm using two different unrelated servers and it is doing the
same thing on both of them on two different machines and several
different OS platforms.

I haven't delved into Seamonkey too deeply other than finding it showing
up recently quite often as the default Internet Application Suite in
several of the newer more compact Linux distributions. I see it is also
available for the Mac platform. Something you might look at.

Damn right. I was cleaning out a junk bin yesterday and found four old
Linux Laden 5 to 10 Gig cast off hard drives. Just wondering what the
hell to do with them. Limber up my throwing arm by gawd. How far is it

I wonder if when the Apple folks decided to build OS X on top of a unix base
they were aware of how much opensource stuff would be easily adaptable to it
just because of that?

Glad I made SOMEONE happy. Nothing wrong with dildo's, though. Grace doesn't
realize, though, that her room mate used the same dildo anally and put it
back into Grace's bedside table, WITHOUT washing it.

I've been preaching this to you guys for years - the only thing that
comes close is Outlook itself (for interoffice mail and adress.calendar
etc)

IE 7 is safe and whilst a bit eycandy catching, its the nicest eyecandy
I've seen/tasted in a while.

I downloaded a Vista lookalike thingy that makes all my XP Pro stuff
appear as if it is Vista.. Niiice, actually I quite liked Vista.
Bought the upgrades on 2 machines (you get the code when Vista
publishes)

OE rocks with OE Quotefix and the <<< stripper

I don't wanna see no web page Tommy. I wanna see a screen shot of

Not if I don;t want to Charlie.

Anyway, I give you the goods, what way you want to use them or not use
them is none of my business.

I have little time for , well lets just say that i give this particular
newsgroup a hell of a lot of my time, more than any other. That is in
itself a compliment for what,?? well for the fact that I got truly
sober and sobered up here, sometimes by walking myself into the shite.
As Ernie would say, its all good. Even making mistakes is allowed, and
by jove I made plenty of them.

I envy you how you can hold a resentful kind of a thought about what
someone posted some years ago - I can't do that Charlie, rightly or
wrongly, when I hang up my drawers tonight and go to bed, then tomorrow
starts life anew for me. New day, new cracks to make, new people to
piss off, all good though.

Could be a glitch I have in my brain. Could just be that I've found a
way to live not being responsible for what others say or do - there's
bits in the big book about that - about not having any control over
people places and things - not letting the sun go down on a bit of an
exchange of 'compliments'...

I tell the Duchess every night before I go to sleep that i love her.
Even in the throes of a dispute. heh heh,. she goes to bed at a
reasonable hour, but I can sleep happy in the thought that even if she
doesn't hear me, at least I've closed the book on a happy note this
day....

Know what though, if I forget to tell her that, it doesn;t make me
upset. Most nights I sleep after me 'penance' is done.. which is
apologising to those I hurt today (in my mind), and try to remember if
I owe anyone anything. Worse agin is that I lend things and money and
alwys forget who to..
Bu tthat few minutes gets me off to sleep. It just isn't good for me
to sleep on a full head.

Shit you know what, it makes me happy and XXXX the rest of them :-()

G'night Texas, and sleep well, sleep on your side, that way the farts
will be behind you :-))
Cheers
Tommy
