BA DA BOOM!!!!!
Boredom is like a pitiless zooming in on the epidermis of time. Every
instant is dilated and magnified like the pores on the face of an
adolescent that has subsisted mainly on pizza.

Are you looking at it from the perspective of one who is bored with the
news group Craig?
Are you saying that nothing that is getting posted these days is
entertaining or inspirational to you?
Or are you doing as Virt sometime suggests. Complaining because *they*
are not doing as good a job as *you* are not doing. ;-)
It Spring time Craig. Most of the pastures are green. Water in all the
ponds and streams and the Billy Goats have no need to cross the bridge
to go anyplace.
Sometime ya just gotta get out frum under the bridge and go looking fer
a goat instead of waiting fer one to come along.

I perceive a change in tenor. Maybe it's just me, maybe not. A certain
headiness seems to have drifted away. As to Virt's standard comment, sure,
there may be some of that. I'm willing to take responsibility for my own
contributions or lack of. The sophisticated wit and thoughtfulness supplied
by others is what has kept me tuning in these last few years, however. I'm
pleased you continue to hang around, Charlie.

I think *change* is the bugaboo Craig.
Some days, weeks, months, and even years the news group has not or is
not what I expect or perceive that it ought to be.
But it is what it is.
Sophisticated wit and thoughtfulness supplied by others?
Good Grief!
I hang around due to being at a stage in life that there is rarely ever
a day that I can come up with enough "something better" to use to kill
all my allocated time. ;-)

Boredom is one of those issue that many alcoholics drank over. I know I did.
Life needed to be exciting, glamorous, on the edge. If it wasn't, something
was wrong. Booze sure helped to keep things stirred up. People, places and
things needed changes. And the one boring issue that tops them all, is "It's
All About Me". If I am not the center of the universe, if people don't
applauded my every action and word, etc. it's boring.
Who among us handles the mundane parts of life without thinking that
something is wrong? Even in sobriety?
Why should it be different here on araa?

The reappearance of teddy began a record breaking period of tedious
redundancy. Even Virt's incisive righting of his rants eventually
became like "They Shoot Horse's Don't They."

So let's do so new topics.
Why do people keep coming back when it's just rerun? People like
ruts? Or are fearful of getting out of the rut?
If you could live to be 150 and substantially slow down the aging
process, what would you do different or what change would that make in
what you believe?
If you knew you were going to die in the next two weeks, what would
you do?
What is the most important thing in your lfe?
Why did God create 250,000 varieties of ants?
Best,

I'd reply that boring people get bored
Interesting people don't seem to get affected by boredom.
Its not exactly drawing teeth or sticking pins under your nails...
Just gently tap your fingers on the keyboard in an orderly and random
fashion.
Hit send and we'll decide if you're boring or not

Not necessarily in this order, (1) get in touch with a small number of

Lately my goat hunting has slacked off. I seem to need a alternative
motive to get me up and about besides strictly goat hunting. Today I
decided to go to the doc to have him take a look at a lymp node that
had popped up....he told me about 45 day ago not to worry about it and
it would leave on it's own.
Saturday on one end it festered and some nice thick creamy pus came
shooting out...doc hadn't mentioned anything about being on the look
out for such!
Anyway today he told me I had an infection...I told him I wasn't going
to play doc like I did the last time around, but if I was I'd have
told myself the same thing. He laughed...said take some anti', and
don't worry about it. Tossed in an energy drink on the house to go
along with the B12 in the butt.
We both had a good laugh about my BP...the last year of work it keep
creeping up and up....going into the second month off the job and I
pop a 128/80 and sitting around on my XXX I have only put 4lbs on.
After all that I went goat hunting at Home Depot.....mostly a scouting
trip...I have a few sited and I think when I go back to town Thursday
for my donation to the dentist I will pull the trigger and bag
them....for sure I won't get bored for awhile then even if I don't
mess around here.

I haven't ever gotten the feeling of 100% rerun. There are always varying
degrees of some of the same themes over and over, but as different folks
drop by, there are always different takes and perspectives put out there. I
figure there's been enough variety to keep my interest on some level for a
while now.
Maybe it's a rut of sorts. I've been expanding my horizons the last couple
years out in the "real world." But the fact is, I really have enjoyed the
social aspect of this NG, have met some interesting people through it, and
have developed some good friendships here. That's been enough to keep me
coming back.
I monitor some other NGs of personal interest, but it's mostly just lurking.
I haven't found another where I've felt quite as at home as here at a.r.aa.
Old habits in part, but the reasons are likely a bit deeper. The other
newsgroups I lurk on are informational - I'm seeking to learn and am much
less likely to pipe up because my knowledge in those areas is limited. But
when I came upon a.r.aa, I was already something of an "expert." I'd been
"around the rooms" for "a few 24 hours." When it came to AA or keeping the
plug in the jug, I probably didn't feel like anybody had much to tell me
that I either didn't already know or hadn't already heard.
In some ways I was dead right about that last part. Much of the rhetoric I
found here was completely predictable. What I wasn't expecting was how
susceptible I ended up being to the more subversive elements posting here.
I simply hadn't realized how ready I was to take some new directions and put
some things behind me. It's been worthwhile.

To become a 'good' arfer is a great thing.

I suppose you are right. It's just that since tedw took over the NG
that its gotten stuck. And he's attracted some playmates who think
there is sport in showing up a moron.

I stick around because of a few people who are interesting.
Interesting for their ideas and interesting for their sense of humor.

I used to do the atheist/xian newsgroups but if you read them for
about a month of so, you've pretty well got all the arguments covered.
I used to do the technical newsgroups and will head for one if I
encounter a problem that Google can't help me solve. I haven't
changed much on my PC for a while (no more ports to add anything) so
if you don't change something, chances are pretty good it will stay
working.
I have a network with Joan and my PC plus a laptop and 3 different
printers containing two scanners...one LaserJet 1300 for faster
printing and two DeskJets for color and photo and scanning. Two
backup devices, one for Joan and one for me.

It's really not that difficult. If one wants to stop and stay
stopped, then one needs to stay away long enough so that the 'power'
to say no returns. Making choices comes back or at least it's
operational. I'm not one of those who think that a drink is going to
leap into my hand then into my mouth before I know what happens. I
will have made a decision. I don't plan to but it's not beyond me.
Nothing tomorrow is beyond me.

I assume you mean the ones who 'tread' on sacred ground might raise
your hackles a little bit? If so, I think I understand. I've tried
to learn to not make my beliefs so personal, that I can't get offended
or enraged by someone having a different point of view. Also, so that
I can change my mind more freely, if I learn something new. Reserving
the right to change my mind keeps me from having to admit I am an
idiot and stuck with it. And believe me, I've learned a great deal
here and was motivated to learn a great deal on my own. A win win.
>I simply hadn't realized how ready I was to take some new directions and put

This newsgroup (or its predecessor) was responsible in a large way for
my decision to change my mind from a believer to an agnostic, while
still very active in AA. In about 1991 or 92. I'd say that was a
new direction. And I've really wanted, from time to time, someone to
convince me I was dead wrong because.......but most of what I've
gotten for that decision and the things I see to support it is insults
and slurs. Not all, but most. It just reminds me how ignorant I was
to accept things on someone else's word in such a large way. I don't
know if you remember Joe Hamill or not, the raging atheist of long
ago, but he and I sparred heavily and you know, he scored heavily on
me and caused me to start looking at what I thought was beyond
question. The rest, as they say, is history.
Best,

Change is good. Try Linux. It changes everything.

Heck, it's all archived and ever available. Well, those that hadn't had
the archive bit turned off. Then it's funny to read all the posts BUT
the unarchived ones. Of course it ruins it when you get those lazy or
diligent posters that quote in toto.

At first I experienced some of that ingrained defensiveness, but what I
really meant was people challenging my long-held understandings and being
ready to openly consider their arguments. In other words, allowing my
doubts to come to the surface instead of masking them with the rote I'd
learned. I found out it was okay to express my doubts and that a lot of
what I'd heard over the years didn't and needn't apply to me personally. I
figured out a good portion of what I perceived to be one-size-fits-all
didn't really fit me very well. I hadn't experienced the same kind of
openness in real world fellowship circles that I discovered here on a.r.aa.

Exactly my experience when I first got here as well.
Of course, then I got all closed-minded again :-)
