A ??? for Saturday

| Do you remember your very first AA meeting??? If so, what one thing do you
remember the most about it?
================================================================
I went to my first meeting when I was about 20 yrs. old. At the beginning
of the meeting, one of the old-timers was reading "How It Works". He had a
very deep and resonant voice. When he got to the line "Many of us exclaimed
What an order! I can't go through with it." He *roared* "What an order!!!"
while slamming his fist down on the table. He scared the crap out of me!
That is the only thing I remember about that meeting! lol

The honest truth for me is that I couldn't wait for it to be over so I could
high tail it with my court card out of there!

The first meeting I *attended* was one that was "brought" to us -- it
was done for our treatment group. What I remember is some man talking
about how he was no longer afraid of death. I have no idea now exactly
*what* he said, but as we say, I wanted what he had.
The first one I *went* to is the one I still go to nearly every
Saturday morning. I remember three things about it. First, we start
the meeting by standing in a circle, arms hugging each other, saying
the serenity prayer. I think I was a little hesitant to join the
circle, but a cute lady (with something like 17 years of sobriety) I
quickly learned was named Katie pulled me into the circle, put her arm
behind me, and said, "we're a huggy bunch." Second, the meeting was on
the fifth step -- somehow, by the time everyone had talked about it, I
*knew* I had to do one, that *wanted* to do one. Finally, we closed,
holding hands, saying the Lord's Prayer. That touched me deeply.
I kept coming back.

Being a hick from the sticks I went to the local meeting to get a few
people off my back. Of course I knew 6 of the eight old farts
there....they made me the center of attention in their pitches.
Then at the end of the meeting they had a birthday cake with candles
for the lone old lady (38 I found out later) because she claimed she
hadn't had a drink in three years.
To say the least I wasn't impressed by the whole deal.
After the meeting I walked across the street to my bud's house and the
plan was to have a couple beers and shoot the shit....The next morning
I woke up slumped in his wheel chair still drunker than a skunk! Ha
ha! I remember him chuckling about how that AA thing didn't seem to
work for me! Ha ha!

Someone saying something to me afterwards that I took the wrong way.
As a result, I decided to go to no more AA meetings.
Almost ten years later (ie August 2003), soon after quitting drinking
again, I went back. From that "first" meeting:

They let me in... but would only allow me 1/2 cup of coffee. I was only 1
1/2 hours early.
