SUGGESTIONS FOR CO-SPONSORING (Recovery Buddies)
The following information are just a few idea to help you get started with
co-sponsoring. Use your imagination and enjoy the company of your
recovery buddy. This is your time to learn to be a friend and to accept
the friendship of another. You've both had some different experiences and
pain, and you've both had some different experiences to draw from.
1. The most important aspect of co-sponsoring is to find someone you like
and respect.
2. Be a good listener withou trying to give too much advise. Tell your
recovery buddy what works for yoiu.
3. Be as honest with yourself and your recovery buddy as you can be
without being hurtful. Be gently with yourself and with your recovery
buddy.
4. Sometimes it's helpful to read and discuss books together. Here are
some books that may be used for this purpose.
12 STEPS TO SELF-PARENTING by Philip Oliver-Diax & Patricia O'Gorman
A GENTLE PATH THROUGH THE TWELVE STEPS by Patrick Carnes, Ph.D.
5. Writing about each step and sharing your writings with each other is
also very useful.
6. Some ideas for places to meet are:
One of your homes if you don't have disruptive family members, and
if there is enough privacy for confidentiality.
A restauarnt if you can find a table that gives a little privacy.
Some restaurants and cafeterias have unlimited refills for coffee or tea,
so you can stay awhile for the cost of the cup.
In nice weather, public parks are a great place to meet. If you
have children sit close enought to the play ground to be able to keep an
eye on them as you talk.
Some libraries have small conference rooms that they allow you to
use for an hour or so.
Permission to copy within the anonymous fellowship.
