I ordered pet products online, and they sent me free catnip. My
daughter says it's 'cat crack'.

Those of you who know how I came to own four cats will be proud to
know I did NOT adopt the stray cat outside. I fed it. I gave it
treats and water. I'll treat it for fleas and ticks and maybe even
take it for shots.

But I am NOT bringing this one inside.

if you look around you can probably find a pet product which is a felt mouse
stuffed with dried catnip. your cats will love you for this, and you'll
have a great time watching them play with it.

it will have kittens under your porch and you'll have to find them all good
homes. then it will have more kittens under your porch.

what you have to do is put it in the car and take it for a ride. drop it
off about 10 blocks away, in front of a house which looks like nice people
live there. wait until there's nobody around, then open the door on the
curb side and say, "bye kitty, out you go." drive back home, and hours
later say gee, i wonder what happened to that new cat. has anyone seen that
new cat? i wonder what happened to it. i guess it took off, oh well.

but then folks like us will find it mewling piteously under the car across
the street, along with three other litter mates and a second pair of kittens
from a different litter. and then we'll be stuck with vet visits and
finding homes for 3 of them and even stucker keeping a pair of them for
ourselves. :P

yeah, you're right. finding homes for 3 of them. 3 little orange tabbies.
we kept the 2 white ones.

we're suckers.

but, really, we only kept one of the white ones, because the acquired
adolescent wants one of them for her own, so it will leave in a few years
when she does. or not.

in any case, we let her name that one. we name our cats after scientists,
but she named hers based on a poll of her friends. so now we have:

einstein
newton
curie

and

lafonda

All four of my cats were brought home either as strays or homeless.
The youngest was found at about two days old under our building. I
kept him, my sister took his sibs.

In fact, all of my finches were homeless or needed adoption.

I am a royal sucker when it comes to saving pitiful pets.

And the bunny that left little pellets on my floor today was adopted.

i feel a certain kinship with your cats, as they are almost certainly
descended from my leonard. back in 1968, leonard was the champion stud
alley cat of all time. he kind of took over the north american
undifferentiated cat gene pool, and i had the honor of being his snack
provider of choice from the window of the $15/week furnished room i lived in
at the time.

yup, $6k a year was fat city in those days. it didn't last long though. by
the early 70's it was changing into modern times pretty quick.

And it helps avoid prostate problems when the males are older. And most
importantly, helps in the fight against pet over-population... and more
strays and unwanted pets being given the blue juice of death in a shelter.
(If they are lucky, they get the blue juice rather than mass extermination
in a gas chamber.)

I know that in the late sixties, my parents bought a three bedroom,
one and a half bath house with a HUGE backyard for $30k. They lost
it, of course, and now the neighborhood is really white trash shitty.
It was nice back then, except for the child molester next door.

so did mine. i don't know what they were thinking. i wasn't about to live
in it, so they got a dog and "my room" ended up being the dog's room. they
covered the floor with newspaper and furnished it with bowls of water and
food, some pillows, and a couple of rawhide bones. one time when i was
there my dad got mad and drop-kicked the dog down the basement stairs for
making too much noise. other times the dog would go catatonic for hours,
trembling in a corner and staring at ghosts only it could see. if you tried
to coax it back to reality, it was liable to bite you. observing that whole
scene there with the mutt made me feel nostalgic yet bitter. i was happy
to have my $15/week room with the shared fridge and can down the smelly
hallway to go home to. the other people there were a grumpy lot, kept to
themselves, but the houselady and i got along great. we'd joke around and
sometimes i'd bring her a coffee cake or ice cream or something, so she'd
cut me slack on the rent when i couldn't make it. sometimes she made tea and
we'd talk in her kitchen, and she didn't complain when my girlfriend came
over even though there was a rule about "no guests after ten", as long as we
were quiet. i wrote a story about living in that place which i still don't
think is too bad, although some of it is made up and there's a lot it
doesn't tell because i couldn't see it yet. who knows, maybe someday you
can read it.

well, that was a stroll down memory lane.

Me, too! After my surgery a couple years back, I downloaded pinball
games I played for months. Not the same, though.

A local radio station is giving away one of the old table stand Ms.

i've never paid for or looked for any pet. okay, well, i've paid plenty for
them, but not to acquire them.

they've all just kind of shown up. my first dog jumped into a friend's car
at a busy intersection. she was a perfect dog...big, black lab, shepard,
border collie mix. she was about 10 months old at the time. since i found
myself naming her a few days later, i figured maybe i should check to see if
my friend had found the owners. nope. i took her in and found out the next
day she had parvo. she survived until a few months ago. the second was
someone my vet was trying to find a home for, a collie mix about tasmin's
size, so i took her. they had fun playing, but lady was a bit too yippy for
my taste. i found her another home when i left the mainland.

heard about the first kitties on the radio. person was trying to give them
away. they came with a really neat story and c was just starting to recover
from surgery, so i went and picked them up. picked up another dog because
my son's nanny moved and couldn't take her. she had the annoying habit of
peeing by the entertainment center when left inside and getting herself
stuck under the house or running away when left on a lead outside. we found
her another home not long after tas died. and then we found the five
kittens under a car across the street.

about 13 years. she went really quickly of a cancer that hit the blood
vessels in her lungs. her ashes are still on my dresser. we'll have to

>

there were actually 2 litters. the orange ones were probably about 6-8
weeks and the white ones were probably about 8-10 weeks when we found them.
we actually rescued 4 one evening. one of the orange ones got away, but we
kept hearing her mewling in the weeds. we left bowls of food out for her.
we finally got her a couple days later. they were all clearly not feral.
the white ones are about 4 months old now. curie is a shoulder cat.
lafonda is a toe pirate.

One of our cats used to hide under the sofa bed and scratch your feet
when you walked by.

that's what happened to me. i fed them and brought them into the cellar in
the winter. (NH and very cold) they both had kittens then one of them got
hit and the other took care of her kittens too.

no, don't do this liz. if you can't care for it, see if you can swing the
price of a neuter or spay at least. or find a no kill facility to take care
of it. there are those around. dumping it on someone else often ends up in
it starving, getting eaten or torn apart by a dog or fox, being hit by a
car, or abused by some XXXXXXX. then it catches a disease and dies a sad
lonely death.

sorry cal but i just don't agree with you on this one. my parents told us
to do this. never again. you can't tell what will happen just because the
house ot neighborhood looks ok.

around the time my ex and i were breaking up, we got yet another new kitty
in the house. this one was a real bad cat, one of those continuous
attention seeker kinds, i'm sure you know the type. well, this was all very
well in the daytime, but it got to be a real pain in the XXX at night. the
cat always showed up at the bedroom door between 3 and 5 am, and the ex
always got up to let her in although i kept asking her to put it down in the
basement, or outside, or i don't care where. but no. the cat then got up
on the bed, would clean itself and doze for about 15 minutes, and then came
up and wanted to play with our heads. at this point i'd get up and put it
outside the door, where it waited just long enough for me to get back into
bed and start to doze off, and then it started to meow and scratch the door
and the ex would get up and let her in again. this would go on till it was
time to get up and go to work. i was at my wits' end with the ex and this
cat. one night i finally said to the ex, "listen i can't stand it any more.
either that cat goes or i go." she said, "so go." so i went, and we never
slept together after that.

but after i moved out, she got tired of that cat and i heard the sequel from
the kids. one weekend she drove it 200 miles north and let it go in the
forest, thinking it could live there with the rest of the feral cat
population, which is large. things went fine for a while after that. she'd
go up to her parents' place in the country and actually see the cat trot by
from time to time with something it had killed hanging out of its mouth.
bowls of milk were left out for it. but sometime later, she got a call from
the local humane society here. she'd forgotten about the microchip implant
in the cat's ear with her name, address, and phone number on it. the cat
had turned up at one of the neighboring farms and you can guess the rest.
so there's my tale of divine feline retribution for today. "how did my poor
kitty end up so far from home? a bad person must have kidnapped her." uh
huh, and you'll be coming to pick her up when?

I tried, but he really seems like it hurts and I just don't know
enough to say. Better to be safe and take him to a bunny person.
