PDAs for medical use

| I am looking to buy a PDA for use during my residency and would appreciate
comments and suggestions for choosing one.
I am considering a PDA-phone like the Treo 600, to avoid having to carry
both a PDA and cell phone. However I noticed that the on board memory on the
Treo is small compared to others. It also does not have wi-fi and bluetooth.
Does anyone have experience with Treo 600? Does it have enough capacity to
support the commonly used softwares ? Any other comments/suggestions? Any
other model anyone will suggest?
Thank you
Amit

| I have a Treo 600 and I'm very happy with it.
In regards to the onboard memory, it has enough onboard memory for
most users. I believe that the onboard memory is comparable to other
PalmOS devices. Remember that PalmOS programs are generally smaller
than the WindowsCE programs. If the onboard memory is not sufficient
(32.8MB), you can use SD cards to increase the space available on your
Treo 600 for your programs or databases.
You are correct that the Treo 600 doesn't have WiFi and BlueTooth.
However anything is possible since the Treo 600 has a SD slot. The
only thing is that it needs the drivers for the various WiFI SD cards
or BlueTooth SD cards available on the market today.
I'm not sure where you are but in Canada, hospitals generally don't
allow people to use cellphones in the premises.

| Depends on your service porovider. You need a unit that will be compatible
with your wireless provider. I use Verizon and an Audiovox Thera Pocket
PC/Phone. Besides the usual Windows programs (Word, Excel, Outlook,
handwriting recognition, etc) I have the following titles installed:
HandHeldMed Patient Tracker 5.1 (free)
Skyscape Archimedes Medical calculator (free)
Skyscape Little Black Book of Surgery
Skyscape Cecil's
Skyscape Drugology
Skyscape Pocket Surgery
Skyscape Washing U Medicine
Skyscape Washington U Surgery
Skyscape Washinton U Intern Survival Guide
Skyscape Taber's
Dubin's Rapid EKG
Bioterrorism
etc....
The PPC has an SD slot that can be used with Bluetooth, GPS, WiFi, etc.
The phone is speakerphone compatible, has 2 speeds of internet access (one
is free, using your cell minutes; hi-speed is extra charge).
Lots more ..........
eBay price - can be found for $99-150

| After my vast experience with PDAs, I came to a conclusion that still PALM
is good. even POCKET PC looks little fancy, considering the overall
functionality PALM is good. it is cheaper, faster, and there are lot of free
programs for PALM. medical software for POCKET PC requires lot of memory and
a lot expensive than PALM software.
coming to your question, I am using TREO 180 which has the maximum memory
of 16 MB only and memory is not expendable, still I have all the programmes
I normally use like minute clinical consultant, A2Z drugs, Dorland's
dictionary, some USMLE stuff apart from other programs like, I.mail, FAX,
games. TREO 600 has much more memory than 180 and it is expandable. even it
doesnthave wi-fi and bluetooth, I don't think it matters much. I strongly
recommend TREO 600, though it is little expensive (600 Dollars)
