Calcium, vitamin D do little for elderly

UPI
Thursday, April 28, 2005

LONDON, England, Apr. 28 (UPI) - Two British studies find
little evidence that giving the elderly a mix of calcium
and vitamin D reduces their risk of broken limbs.

In one trial, Dr. Adrian Grant of the university of
Aberdeen and his colleagues followed 5,300 men and women
over the age of 70 who had suffered a fracture in the
last 10 years. The subjects were assigned randomly to
groups given supplements of Vitamin D, calcium or both or
a placebo.

Grant reported to The Lancet that there was no difference
between the groups in the rate of new fractures.

In another study reported in the British Medical Journal,
researchers tracked more than 3,000 elderly women deemed
to be at a high risk for broken hips. Half the group were
counseled by a nurse on avoiding fractures and Vitamin D
and calcium tablets, while the others were given only a
pamphlet on avoiding falls.

The report said that overall the fracture rate was lower
than expected, but there was no significant difference
between the two groups.

What dosages were being used, and was vitamin D3 (the real one) being
used or vitamin D2 (the fake one) being used? What sort of calcium was
used? Was it calcium citrate (almost all absorbed) or was it calcium
carbonate (2% absorbed)?

There already have been studies that have shown that 100% of elderly who
start to fall down regularly are deficient in vitamin D. It was shown
that vitamin D supplements did not help them, but that 1000 IU of
vitamin D plus 1200 mg of calcium daily had demonstrable improvement in
muscle strength.

This study only reviewed patients for 24mths, not long enough to obtain
positive benefits in bone density following natural supplementation.
Besides, bone health requires synergy from quite a few nutrients,
including vitamin K, vitamin C, magnesium, zinc and potassium. The
elderly are often seriously deficient in a number of these. So the
study was really a waste of money, except for makers of osteo drugs.

Well, they certainly are suspect. They must be double-checked.
