Calcium, vitamin D do little for elderly

UPI
Thursday, April 28, 2005

LONDON, England, Apr. 28 (UPI) - Two British studies find
little evidence that giving the elderly a mix of calcium
and vitamin D reduces their risk of broken limbs.

In one trial, Dr. Adrian Grant of the university of
Aberdeen and his colleagues followed 5,300 men and women
over the age of 70 who had suffered a fracture in the
last 10 years. The subjects were assigned randomly to
groups given supplements of Vitamin D, calcium or both or
a placebo.

Grant reported to The Lancet that there was no difference
between the groups in the rate of new fractures.

In another study reported in the British Medical Journal,
researchers tracked more than 3,000 elderly women deemed
to be at a high risk for broken hips. Half the group were
counseled by a nurse on avoiding fractures and Vitamin D
and calcium tablets, while the others were given only a
pamphlet on avoiding falls.

The report said that overall the fracture rate was lower
than expected, but there was no significant difference
between the two groups.

peace, but a sword.
"For I am come to set a man at variance against his father, and the
daughter against her mother, and the daughter in law against her mother in

"And a man's foes shall be they of his own household.
