I have advanced osteo of both hips. several drs have said they need to
be replaced. I am 63. Also, I have had trochanteric bursitis of both
hips for 15 yrs or so. the other day I went to my ortho dr. He thinks
it's time for the hip replacement and, while I was ther, he gave me 4
cortisone shots for the bursitis. I feel like a new person. the
terrible pain is gone. Yesterday, I was on my feet all day with no
problems.
How long do these shots last? How many could I get a year? If I feel
this well, do I need the replacement surgery? Obviously, I am very
confused. any info would be much appreciated. Thank you.

Hi,,, No one can actually tell you how long your shot will last.
Sometimes its 3 weeks and sometimes its 3 months. This type of shot can
relieve you for awhile but they correct nothing. You will still need the
operation.

Bummer! I was hoping to hear that the shots would last for 3 months--I
could get them indefinitely, and postpone the surgery for ages. Guess
it was too good to be true.
However, is there a limit to how many cortisone shots one can get?
Thanks.

Drs . say only 3 shots per year, might fudge with one more. First couple
worked for me, then they did not work at all. Might as well bite the
bullet, have the operation and get it over with.

i understand the impulse, but understand - the longer you wait, the
greater the damage and the more work to implant a prothesis - with a
possibility that you could do 'too' much damage...

be well

Yes,,,,,, it does its own kind of damage with every shot. I have had two
Rheumatologists that both said that a person could not have more than three
shots a year in any one joint. This could change with different doctors
and it does matter the size of the shot.

OK, thanks all. You're right of course. In my initial pain free
euphoria I thought I might not to have to bite the bullet and could get
by surgery free.
And, I must admit that I never considered that I would do further
damage.
Sooo, tomorrow I will start the process (preliminary x rays). It should
go better when I'm relatively young and healthy.
Thanks again. I needed a dose of reality.
