| Hi,
Back in 1994 I spent several months in Ireland.
I remember one TV commercial (well, more like a health department
sponsored ad) for a campaign for safe sex.
The whole thing was one guy on a stool on a blank background. He just
sat there and explained with a dead serious face, why "we Irish" are
special and therefore we are not like the other people. We don't get
diseases they get. So we can't get Aids. So it only makes sense that
we don't need to use condoms!
After a short dramatic pause he looked you in the eye and added. "Now
that's a joke."
I loved how you juts couldn't help but keep thinking the exact opposite
of what he was saying. "What do you mean we are different? Of course we
CAN and DO get sick like any other nation! We get the flue and
pneumonia and any other disease! And of course we COULD get aids if we
are not careful! And WE DO NEED TO USE CONDOMS!!!!!!"
Only then, when he told you he was joking, only then did you realize he
got you to think exactly what he wanted you to think, despite the fact
that he was saying the exact opposite all the time.
I was told at the time that he was one of the most popular comedians or
actors in Ireland.
I am looking for any info on this, so if you know the name of the actor
or anything else that could help my find an actual video of it, or even
just the text - I'd appreciate your help greatly.
