Press Release: Down with corruption in the healthcare system!
FrontAIDS
28 November 2006
*****************

DOWN WITH CORRUPTION IN THE HEALTHCARE SYSTEM!

DOWN WITH DISRUPTIONS IN ANTIRETROVIRAL DRUGS SUPPLY!

DOWN WITH THE CRIMINAL CONSPIRACY BETWEEN GOVERNMENT OFFICIALS AND
PHARMACEUTICAL COMPANIES!

FrontAIDS is organizing a meeting on the protection of rights of
people living with HIV. The meeting is to be held 28 November 2006
(13.00) on Pushkin Square in Moscow.

In 2005 Russian President Vladimir Putin announced allocation of 3.1
billion rubles to treat HIV-infection and viral hepatitis as part of
the high priority national 'Health' project. In 2006 a special state
commission on HIV/AIDS was created, while HIV/AIDS issues were high on
the agenda of the G8 Summit in St. Petersburg.

According to the World Health Organization, nearly 100.000 people in
Russia need treatment. The Ministry of Health and Social Development
promised to provide treatment for 19.147 HIV-positive people but
failed to fulfill the commitment, 15.000 of whom were to receive
treatment through the National HIV/AIDS Program "Health". This failure
was a result of the criminal negligence of the officials who hampered
the procurement of medications. Antiretroviral drugs for 15.000 people
were supposed to be purchased in February 2006 but reached the
country's AIDS centers only in November 2006. The country experienced
disruptions in the delivery of antiretroviral medications already in
March.

Currently the Ministry of Health and Social Development, which is
responsible for the appalling situation with access to life-saving
drugs for HIV-positive people is under investigation for a corruption
scandal and commonplace bribes related to the Supplemental Drug Supply
program. But the failure of the national HIV/AIDS program "Health",
unauthorized use of financial resources allocated for HIV treatment,
and a criminal conspiracy between the government officials and
pharmaceutical corporations which sell antiretroviral drugs have
remained unnoticed.

Thousands of people throughout Russia were not able to start
treatment. Others who had started treatment were forced to stop
treatment or change their regimens several times. Some have already
died, having never received the pills they needed. Those whose
treatment was interrupted are at risk of developing resistance to the
drugs.

Today the price of drugs purchased under the 'Health' project is
higher (a minimum of 500$ per person annually) than the established
market price. Thus one can easily calculate the amount that has
disappeared into the pockets of government officials: millions of
dollars.

We demand an investigation!
We demand the transparency of the procurement system!
We demand to end corruption!
We demand uninterupted treatment!

We demand the Russian authorities to put an end to the criminal
activities of bureaucrats in Russia!

Gee, the Director of FIAR shows us his FIRE!

Meantime, of course, while George Mary shrieks about the evil
drug companies, he fails to disclose his own conflicts on interest...
only the least of which had to do with the money he grubbed
from Arkopharma France and the boys from NAC...

lol!

Hey Carter! I almost believed you had become an aids-denier over the night. But no,
you're still the good ol' dumb Georgie. It's strange though, terms like "healthcare
corruption" and "conspiracy" backed up by you. Aren't they your pals anymore ?

FIAR nor I wrote this press release, dear. This is from the people of
Russia living with and fighting HIV disease.

I have none.

You fail to disclose your identity, while lying about people and
making shit up!

And after all this time--you're the same miserable, sad, painful
little shit which I am quite sure you will die being.

Too bad for you.

No, dear. They never have been. That's the fantasy people like you
cook up.

I advocate access to healthcare for ALL human beings. That includes
but is not limited to appropriate drug therapy.

And my beefs with pharma include:
1) Genocidal pricing practices;
2) distortion of science to sell more drugs;
3) cheapening medical journals;
4) influencing politics to prevent a single payer healthcare system in
the US;
5) pharmaceutical advertising;
6) distorting intellectual property in ways that actually inhibit
innovation while further distorting discovery into the service of
generating profit (with health a distant side effect).0

I am not now nor have I ever been a big fan of the pharmaceutical
industry.

Despite the lies, innuendo and libel of people who don't want to see
the truth. Like you and Fred Shaw.

Oh, I'm sorry - I thought you were soliciting Paypal donations for
condomizing that randy group of gay Nepalese Sherpas....

Oh, no ... he meant "Paypals", as in FIAR donations (tax deductible
and not-so-nonprofit, one might add).

Yes, donations to FIAR are tax deductible! Thank you for pointing that
out at this giving time of year.

Of course, I wasn't soliciting donations to FIAR in that post, but
since you bring it up, carry on!

FIAR is doing some great work but there's a lot more to do.
