Number of homosexuals infected with HIV more than doubles in Norway

The number of homosexuals annually infected with HIV in Norway more than doubled in the past
two years, a Norwegian public health official told daily Dagsavisen in an interview published
on Sunday.
After a decade of registering about 30 new HIV cases among homosexuals each year, the Norwegian
Institute of Public Health in 2003 listed 57 gays who had been infected, and preliminary
numbers for 2004 show 61 new cases.
"The real number is probably much higher," Institute counselor Oeivind Nilsen told Dagsavisen,
adding that he would not be surprised if there were more than 70 cases of new HIV infection
among homosexuals last year.
"The reasons for the increase in HIV (infections) are many, but one of the most worrying
reasons is that gays expose themselves to a risk of infection by having unsafe sex," Nilsen
said.
The rise was especially sharp in Oslo, where at least eight homosexuals were infected by the
same man last year, according to Dagsavisen.
Norway, with a population of about 4.5 million, saw the total number of people infected with
HIV last year jump to more than 250 up from 238 in 2003, the paper reported.
