| Have been a type 2 diabetic for about 9 years and am doing fine.
I do watch the labeling on what I eat and have come across something I'm not
sure of, on the label it is called digestible carbs.
It is a brand of pasta that is sold in major stores (I will mention the name
in case someone is familiar with it or a like product.) . The name is
Dreamfields and it shows 42g of carbs per 56g serving (pretty standard). I
like pasta but stay away for the most part due to the carbs. The package
advertises it only has 5g of digestible carbs. 42 - 37 protected carbs
(????). The package has a good housekeeping seal and everything seems ok.
My blood sugars do not seem to shoot up when I eat it but that could be the
result of other good habits. Exercise and small portions.
Anyway, it would be appreciated if anyone has some information on the term
digestible carbs.
Thanks in advance,
Steve

The ones who have tried Dreamfields say check with your meter - it affects
some people's blood sugar like regular pasta or sometimes later than
usual, especially if you cook it longer than the directions call for.

| Probably everyone is affected differently.
I think the best is to test for a period of time. run a test before you eat
the pasta, 1, 2 and 4 hours later to see what it does.
It's a carb load that is important - not just the carb values. carb load is
diferent for every individual.

I believe that 'digestible carbs' should mean not fibre. In the U.S. for
some obscure reason, fibre is listed under carbs, so you take total carbs
and subtract out fibre to get net carbs.

I never heard of digestible carbs or protected carbs. The only info
I've heard of related to that is that if a serving has 5g or more of
fiber, then you can deduct the amount of fiber from the carbs. For
example, if you had a serving of pasta that was listed as 30g of
carbohydrate and 5g of fiber, you could deduct the 5g of fiber from the
total, so that you're actually eating 25g of carbs.
But this is not universally accepted.
Are you reading the product label, or the official nutritional info on
the label? I totally ignore everything on the label except for the
official nutritional info. They have to tell the truth on the official
nutritional info. Everything else on the label is dubious.

| The information on the nutritional label shows the higher carb count and
only 2 fibers. The net 5 grams of fiber is printed elsewhere on the label.
Sounds like you might be correct and I would be wise to only use the
Nutritional label.
Thanks for the good info.
