When the craving is at it's strongest - resist it - even if only for 5
minutes, resist it "knowing" that you will give in to it, but not when the
craving is at it's strongest.

Hi, Mich. I'm glad to see you aren't mad at me any more. I do like you
and was sorry to have offended you. But I guess that was a long time ago.
But are you talking about the gambling or the cigarettes? With
cigarettes, I find that your suggestion works. I can't smoke at my desk
at work, and I like to type 10 pages between cigarettes. Sometimes I
will get the urge to smoke when I'm at page 7, and if I fight it off, I
find that I have reached page 12 before realizing that I've missed my
break point and don't want a cigarette any more. I still take a break
because high-volume typing without frequent breaks is career suicide--
you get tenosynovitis before you can blink, especially when you have
blood sugar problems the way I do.
Ironically, the longest I go without a cigarette except when I'm
sleeping is on the bus to the casino. Usually the ride takes about an
hour and 45 minutes. After about an hour I get a funny feeling in my
throat and pretty much must drink water every five minutes in order to
avoid coughing fits. The bus first stops to disbark passengers at the
bus station and then proceeds to the casino. Those last five minutes
are the most difficult, but once I get off the bus, I find that I don't
need to light a cigarette right away.
I was disappointed that Niagara falls, in which the casino is located,
has gone totally nonsmoking. Even the restaurant right beside the
casino is completely nonsmoking, and I used to have a snack in there for
luck before gambling. No longer. But the two casinos in the Falls
still permit smoking.
They were talking about building a casino in my city of Toronto as part
of a redevelopment plan if they got the 2008 Olympic Games. Since
Beijing got them, I'm not sure they still will, but the Toronto
non-smoking by-law applies to casinos as well, so I would almost
certainly not go to any Toronto casino. Currently there is a fair going
on downtown on a year-round fairground, and it has a casino, but because
it's nonsmoking I haven't had the slightest urge to go.

Offended me? Mad at you? That's the first I've heard. If you did or I did
or you didn't and I did or I did and didn't know or you didn't know and did
or you knew and I didn't or you did and I didn't know or you thought I knew

It was written for the other addiction, not the smoking.

Say you arrived, and then instead of going to the tables (or whatever) then
hold off and wander around until the really bad craving has gone, and then
maybe you might get just a bit more casual about it?
