Bird Flu Could Soon Infect and Kill Humans

Another influenza pandemic is a matter of time. Doctor Michael Osterholm of the
University of Minnesota's Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy
can't predict when, but he says it's coming.

He says the most likely strain has been active in southeast asia. It's known as
Avian influenza, or so - called bird flu. There it has killed birds and has made
the deadly jump from birds to people.

Within the health community, there's concern it might evolve into a person to
person disease, setting off a pandemic. Osterholm says "What we have in
southeast Asia has all the markings of being a worldwide pandemic of a very
serious nature. And whether it's next week, next month, next year, I don't know.
But I absolutely believe it's coming."

Three pandemics struck the world in the last century. By far the most deadly was
the Spanish flu of 1918 - 19. It killed 40 million people. Osterholm believes,
if there's a pandemic of the current bird flu strain, some 18 thousand twin
citians would die.

The World Heatlh Organization met in Geneva this week with vaccine makers to
come up with ways to deal with a pandemic.

The strain circulting in Asia is H5N1 and produces a case fatality
rate in the 70-80% range

If that virus gains human to human transmission, the pandemic would be
much worse than 1918.

Thanks.

I'll post the link (and paragraphs) at a major newspaper forum near where the
Epidemiologist resides. Maybe the State will declare war on all the ducks in
every park! This will be interesting.
