I just installed DSL, a firewall, & NSW 2005 onto a Dell machine running on
Windows Me. Frustrating story short? The User resources are down to 43% after
bootup. When I open Word 2000, the resources go down 20%, down to 23%; and when
I do a small printjob, the User resources get used up another 13%, so I'm down
to 10% User resources free and I get an error message when the Resources meter
is turned on (from System Tools in Accessories), saying 90% of the User
resources are in use.
Before unchecking a few things in msconfig, I'd run flat out of Resources
and everything I clicked on would give me error messages. I do a print job and
it tells me to reinstall the printer drivers; or I'd click on the Start Button
after that error message and get a total "explorer" shutdown error message in
white with black print!
We had a 200 Mhz machine that had only 64 MB of RAM that we had to put to
pasture because Norton used up most of its RAM and was not internet worthy with
the local ISP's anymore.
Windows Me will have to be put to pasture as not being internet worthy
because the User resources won't support the new Norton & Zone Alarm products I
just installed, while using Word and the printer at the same time. I'll have to
install a 2nd hard drive, partition it, and install Win XP after I download a
bunch of drivers. Win XP doesn't have the User resources hangup that Win Me &
Win 98 SE has. The NEW bloatware has gotten TOO bloated for the outdated
operating systems.
